The Auto-ID Center at MIT was
formed in late 1999 with industrial supports. RFID technology
was developed including the EPC for"worldwide uniquely identifiable
numbers" where as these numbers are 'stored' in an RFID tag
(a transponder). Data captured off these tags can be shared
among supply chain partners via the Internet. The development
of this information infrastructure was passed on to a not-for-profit
organization - the EPCglobal, Inc. This organization was part
of the international standardization organization EAN-UCC
in October 2003. GS1 is now the organization name since mid
2006.
